Old silver fillings are not only toxic to our health because they leak mercury into our bodies, but they are also bad for our teeth. Over time they continue to expand such that they create open margins for bacteria to seep into the tooth causing decay, as well as the expansion can cause tooth fracture.
It is very important to replace these fillings before your tooth breaks so that we can repair the tooth conservatively. Often times the break or crack can propagate too far so that the tooth may need a root canal or implant.
Here is a case we recently saw in our office, where luckily a small part of the tooth broke off, and we were able to repair the tooth with a porcelain onlay. Let me know what you think!
